A Message from Mary

Mary Kuncas, Vice President, Patient Services

It is an exciting time to be a nurse at Saint Raphael’s! For over 100 years, we have served the New Haven community. And, with your help, we will continue to do so for one hundred more.

Here, in our fast-paced teaching environment, we’re growing key clinical services (including bone and joint, vascular, and thoracic surgery); focusing on patient safety/quality improvement/patient satisfaction initiatives; and working on recertification of our trauma program – all with the intention of remaining in the top 5% of US hospitals for clinical excellence and patient safety (HealthGrades).

Our commitment to our professional nursing staff is represented in a number of ways, including:

• An active Staff Development Department
• A recently introduced clinical career ladder
• Annual monetary awards for specialty certification
• Immediate health care coverage from day one
• Staff-driven teams working on our Magnet application
• Shared governance
• Nursing Management Council with staff nurse representation from every unit
• Clinical nurse specialists in a variety of areas
• Clinical resource nurses to support staff in handling complex cases

In fact, earlier in 2009, we were named among the "Top 100 Hospitals to Work for" by Nursing Professionals magazine. We know that by giving you the support and development opportunities you desire, we can continue to provide the superior care our community has come to know – and expect.
